Lorraine’s Response: Yes, it is still taught, but is sometimes using a method called Whole Language. Research indicates that phonics is an important skill, but that children also need exposure to books as well. I personally believe phonics provide a strong foundation for reading success and should be taught systematically, building the blocks necessary for a good foundation. I alsoREAD MORE

When selecting books for him to read to you, choose topics that interest him. Ask a librarian to help you find ones written at a second grade level.
